Dialysis: Live A Happy And Healthy Life

Dialysis: Live A Happy And Healthy Life
A:

Understandably, people experience high stress when they need to start dialysis. Some may become quiet and depressed because they are not ready for the idea that they need to rely on dialysis for a long time, and those negative thoughts and emotion can lower their quality of life. The truth is people on dialysis can improve their physical strength and mood through eating right and exercising.

About Diet

People on dialysis should eat high-quality protein for muscle building and strengthening the immune system. High-quality protein comes from eggs, meat, fish, etc. Take notes on how much fluid is safe to consume per day. Water, tea, coffee, and any food that is in liquid form under room temperature should be counted as fluid. Avoid food that is high in sodium, potassium, and phosphorous. These are only some examples of basic food rules. Food choices and portion sizes vary among individuals. Please consult with a dietitian for more personalized advice.

About Exercise

For a long time, people on dialysis have been discouraged from exercising. In fact, exercise plays a role in maintaining their quality of life. Core strengthening exercises are especially beneficial as weak core muscles put extra strain on their lumbar spine. Walking, cycling, and swimming are recommended. Training doesn't need to be vigorous. Regular exercise for 20-30 mins a few times a week is likely to improve people's mental and physical health on dialysis. Work under the supervision of an exercise professional if needed.
